Balanced EquineLife: Living with horses in natural balance

Updated: 3 days ago

Over the past few years, many wonderful approaches to natural horse keeping have emerged. Concepts such as Paddock Paradise, Equihabitat and Browsing Paddock have inspired horse owners around the world to look differently at how horses can live.

These approaches have contributed valuable ideas and have helped raise awareness about the importance of meeting a horse's natural needs.

At the same time, many of these names are linked to specific systems or registered concepts that cannot simply be adopted outside their original context.

That led me to make an important decision.

Rather than building my work around an existing system, I chose to give my own vision a name. Balanced EquineLife.

Not as a new method or another system to follow, but as a reflection of the way life with horses has naturally evolved here at Finca La Sonrisa in Andalusia. It has grown from the land itself, the possibilities it offers and, above all, from listening to the horses.

Not a system, but a way of seeing

Balanced EquineLife is not a fixed formula, nor is it an ideal copied from somewhere else.

It has developed through observation.

By paying attention to what this landscape offers and what the horses show us when they are given the freedom to live according to their nature.

Every location is different. Every landscape has its own strengths and its own limitations.

That is the reality of natural horse keeping.

It is not about creating perfection. It is about working in harmony with what is available.

What has emerged here is not a blueprint, but a way of living with horses where their natural behaviour guides every decision we make.

What this looks like in practice

At Finca La Sonrisa, our horses are free to live as naturally as possible.

They live outdoors together as a stable herd throughout the year.

They move freely across varied, hilly terrain.

They always have access to hay and a carefully selected range of minerals.

They choose where they want to spend their time, whether that is in the sunshine, beneath the trees or in one of the sheltered areas.

They can browse among trees and shrubs, following their natural instinct to explore and forage.

These are not separate management choices.

Together they create an environment where freedom, choice and natural behaviour come first.

The body reflects the environment

One aspect that is often underestimated is the profound influence the environment has on a horse's body.

The varied terrain, different surfaces and continuous free movement naturally strengthen muscles, improve balance and support healthy hoof development without the need for structured exercise.

Mental wellbeing is just as important.

Living in a stable social group, having the freedom to make choices and being able to seek solitude when needed all contribute to a horse's overall wellbeing.

Together, these elements create an environment that supports the horse as a whole, both physically and emotionally.

Balance is not only about horses

This way of living has taught me something else.

Balance is not only important for horses.

Creating a natural environment requires commitment, time and energy. It is not simply a hobby. It becomes a way of life.

That is why balance also matters for the people who care for them.

Looking after your horses begins with looking after yourself.

Making time for rest.

Nurturing your relationships.

Creating a way of working that is not only inspiring, but also sustainable for the long term.

Only then can the care we offer remain genuine, balanced and heartfelt.

People and horses moving in harmony

At Finca La Sonrisa, all of these elements come together.

Not only in the way our horses live, but also in the coaching sessions and systemic work I offer alongside them.

The horses live from a place of calm, freedom and connection.

That is precisely what makes their reflections so honest.

What they show us is immediate and authentic.

Nothing is rehearsed. Nothing is filtered.

Only what is truly present in the moment.

Living in harmony

Balanced EquineLife is not about following a method or adopting a label.

It is an invitation to return to something much simpler.

To live and work in balance.

In harmony with your horse.

In harmony with nature.

And perhaps most importantly, in harmony with yourself.
