Self confidence, healthy boundaries and what horses can teach us

How do you know when you are truly standing in your own strength?
Many people believe that self confidence means never doubting yourself. In reality, it is something quite different. True self confidence is not about never feeling uncertain. It is about staying true to yourself, even when doubt or discomfort is present.
During a coaching session with Enero, this became beautifully clear.
Horses respond to what you truly communicate
Horses do not listen to our words.
They respond to what is happening beneath them.
Not to what we try to show, but to what we genuinely feel.
That is why they are such powerful mirrors, revealing patterns we are often unaware of ourselves.
During this particular session, the client was exploring themes such as building self confidence, standing up for herself and setting clearer boundaries.
Together with Enero, she walked through a course where each obstacle represented a situation or challenge from her own life.
The course itself was never the goal.
It was simply a way of making something invisible become visible.
The moment a boundary becomes real
At one of the obstacles, something remarkable happened.
As they approached a narrow passage together, Enero suddenly decided to move in a different direction, stepping directly into her personal space.
It was only a small moment.
Yet it spoke volumes.
Instead of giving way or becoming uncertain, she remained calm and grounded.
She clearly indicated her boundary and stayed committed to the direction she had chosen.
There was no force. No frustration. No anger.
Just quiet clarity.
And because of that, there was no struggle.
Enero immediately accepted her leadership, and together they continued through the course in a calm and relaxed way.
Awareness changes behaviour
Only afterwards we did take time to reflect on what had happened.
What enabled her to hold her boundary this time?
How did it feel in her body?
What thoughts were present?
As she became more aware of her own responses, she experienced greater calm, greater confidence and a deeper connection with herself.
That inner shift was immediately reflected in her partnership with Enero.
What horses teach us
This, to me, is one of the greatest gifts of horse assisted coaching.
Horses do not give advice.
They do not judge.
They simply reflect what is present in the moment.
In doing so, they help us recognise patterns that often remain unnoticed in everyday life.
Not so we can force ourselves to change.
But so we can first understand what is happening beneath the surface.
Because lasting change rarely begins with doing more.
It begins with awareness.
From that awareness comes the freedom to make different choices.
To stand more firmly in yourself.
To set healthy boundaries with confidence.
And to follow your own path with greater trust.
Thank you, Enero, for your honest reflection and for the beautiful role you played during this special coaching session.
