When a horse brings movement to a family constellation

Updated: 3 days ago

Last week, Mara once again showed me how extraordinary horses can be during a systemic family constellation.

During an individual session, we worked with floor markers representing different family members and emotions within the client's family system. As the client explored her process step by step, something unexpected happened.

Mara walked over to me and, not once but twice, gently took several of the markers from my hand. She carefully placed them on top of the marker representing one particular person in the constellation. The original marker became almost completely covered, as though that person had literally been pushed into the background.

We took a moment to observe what had happened without immediately trying to interpret it. Instead, we became curious. Together we explored what this image evoked. By slowing down, sensing what was present and asking a few gentle questions, something began to unfold.

The client recognised what the image was showing her.

For the first time in many years, she was able to acknowledge something towards the person who had been "covered over." It was something that had remained unspoken for a long time. Through Mara's spontaneous intervention, space opened for a new movement within the constellation.

This is exactly what makes working with horses so special.

Horses do not act from analysis or intention. They simply respond to what is present in the moment. Their behaviour can gently draw our attention to the deeper dynamics that are often hidden beneath the surface.

Not every constellation unfolds in this way, and it is impossible to predict what a horse will do. Their responses are always their own. But when a horse naturally becomes part of the process, it can offer a valuable invitation to explore what is asking to be seen.

That is often where change begins.

A space opens for insight, acknowledgement and healing.

And sometimes, that is exactly what is needed for something that has been stuck for many years to begin moving again.
