Emotional maturity: Responding from your adult self instead of your inner child

We often believe that we consciously choose how we respond to the situations we encounter in daily life. In reality, that is not always the case. Sometimes an old wound or deeply rooted belief quietly takes over. A comment, a look or a situation can touch something from the past, causing us to react far more strongly than we would like. We are no longer responding from who we are today, but from a part of ourselves that was shaped many years ago.
In systemic work, this part is often referred to as the inner child. It carries the experiences, beliefs and emotions we developed during childhood. When one of these old patterns is triggered, we tend to react automatically. We may become defensive, withdraw or lash out, even though the present situation does not truly call for it.
Becoming aware of old patterns
Systemic work helps bring these unconscious patterns into awareness. Together we explore the place you have taken within your family system and the beliefs, responsibilities or loyalties you may have carried for many years without even realising it.
As you begin to recognise these patterns, something shifts.
Space opens.
Instead of reacting automatically, you gain the freedom to choose how you want to respond. From a place of calm, connection and the adult you are today.
Why horses are such powerful mirrors
During a coaching session with horses, something remarkable happens.
A horse does not respond to your words. It responds to what you are communicating beneath them. Horses are incredibly sensitive to what is happening within you and reflect it with complete honesty, free from judgement.
This is what makes unconscious patterns so visible.
Not because the horse is analysing you, but because it naturally responds to your energy, your emotions and your authenticity.
That is why an encounter with a horse is often surprisingly honest and deeply meaningful.
It creates awareness.
And awareness is where real change begins.
More understanding for yourself and for others
Imagine how much more peace we would experience if we all became a little more aware of our own patterns. How many conflicts might soften if we recognised that it is often not another person who hurts us, but an old wound that has been touched.
Emotional maturity does not mean you are never triggered.
It means recognising what is happening within you and learning, little by little, to respond from awareness instead of from an automatic survival strategy.
A place to discover what is truly happening within
At La Sonrisa Coaching with Horses, I have created a place where you are invited to explore, experience and reconnect with what is truly alive within you.
Together with the horses, we gently uncover old patterns and create space for insight, compassion and personal growth.
Because lasting change does not begin by trying harder or becoming someone else.
It begins with awareness.
